Photographer's Note
The most beautiful building in Helsinki - according to me - the central station. Helsinki's first railway station was built in 1862 to accommodate trains on the Helsinki–Hämeenlinna line, However, as the popularity of railways grew, the station turned out to be too small, and a contest was organised in 1904 with the intention of producing plans for a new station. The contest received 21 entries, and was won by Eliel Saarinen, with a pure national romanticist design, which sparked off a vigorous debate about the architecture of major public buildings, with demands for a modern, rational style. Saarinen himself abandoned romanticism altogether and re-designed the station completely. The new design was finished in 1909 and the new station building was opened in 1919.

Hello Gerrit,
Although being over 100 years old, the station looks great in this specific architecture. A beautifully composed photo with the pedestrian crossing stripes in the foreground and a wonderful train station in the background.
Well done with good quality.
Best regards,
Zbigniew

Hello Gerrit,
I probably agree with your judgement of this building. It's a remarkably beautiful railway station, a masterpiece of art nouveau. It was one of the highlights of my only visit to Helsinki, and this photo is taken from a good angle where the zebra crossing becomes part of the composition. The cloudy sky was probably an advantage. It makes the light and colours nicely soft.
Best regards,
Gert

Goedenavond Gerrit,
Heel mooi foto werk, goed gedaan. Bedankt.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John.

Pozdrav.
Lep pogled, dobar tekst ...
Lepo mesto i stara arhitektura, dobro pokazano sa lepim bojama, kontrastom, perspektivom i uhvacenim trenutkom sa oblacima koji dolaze i najavljuju promenu vremena.
Dobar rad, lepa fotografija.
Lepa stara zeleznicka stanica.
Zelim vam lepu i mirnu noc, sve najbolje.

Hi Gerrit
Some superb buildings in here, the framing works really well to accentuate the shape and detail of the notable classic buildings. Lovely range of colours especially when seen against greyish sky and I like best with the zebra crossing being part of a streetscape lends an appealing invitation to explore what's beyond. Looks like you had a very productive photographic walk out here. Congrats

Hi Gerrit
Now the style of the railway station would be difficult to define - there is a touch of art deco or art nouveau but others as well. A good photo of an interesting building.
cheers

Hello Gerrit, to me this station is in the style of Art Deco; whichever style, it is a beautiful and special building.
You managed an excellent point of view, the zebra crossing adding dynamism to the composition.
I always like it when we can view two faces of a building as here.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Gerrit,
I never realised that a zebra crossing could be so effective! Its long, b&w lines guide us safely across the road to see the very modern looking Central Station, though it is already a century old!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Gerrit,
I am not sure whether this statement about being the most beautiful building in Helsinki, achieves the expected effect here. Maybe it is because I don't know much about art and history of architecture but this does not encourages me to visit.
The weather was bit challenging but I see you compensated with great processing to emphasize the beauty of this place.
Very well done,
M
