Photographer's Note

Back from a two weeks working vacation (renovation of granma's house)at my in-laws in eastern Finland, where there was the coldest Juhanus midsummer for the past 36 years. With temperatures around 8 degrees Celsius and some heavy wind and hailstorms it was a real pleasure to have a broken water pump in our cabin in the woods. Water had to be hauled from the lake manually and the morning shower taken in the sauna by the sea.
Nevertheless we where able to visit some interesting places again.
Here we can see the main church of the orthodox monastery of Uusi (new) Valamo. It is the only male orthodox monastery in Finland and lies in the commune of Heinevesi in eastern Finland, some 400km north of Helsinki.
The monastery was originally established in the 8th century on the island of Valamo in the Ladoga lake. During the winter war of 1941 the monks had to flee the russians and resettled in today's spot. There is still a monastery on Valamo island called the old (vanha) Valamo. Uusi Valamo is today the center of the russian orthodox faith in Finnish Carelia and attracts many pilgrims throughout the year.
