Photographer's Note

Construction of the covenant building or the Small Castle was started in the 13th century. The Dome Church situates on its southern side, the rest of the three annexes were living and working quarters for Oesel-Wiek Bishopric’s bishops, canons and other officials. Haapsalu castle was the centre of command of Western Estonia between 13th and 16th centuries – around 300 years – during which diplomatic and economical ties were developed with the Pope’s Curia and other powers of Europe. The entire era of the Bishopric saw 25 bishops and we know by name 190 canons.
