Photographer's Note

Denmark is a country shaped by its waters: its sounds, belts, archipelagos, fjords, bays, inlets and coves. The natural coastline of 7,400 km is the most coherent and largest nature area in Denmark. The varied areas with shallow water protected from waves and usually free from ice-cover during winter are important for large numbers of migratory wintering birds. Besides the richness in biological and geological values the coastal zone has many cultural values as well - like this fjord. It is the Flensburg Fjord, occasionally known as the Flensburg Firth that in the far north of Germany forms part of the border between Germany to the south and Denmark to the north stretching 50 kilometers into the Baltic Sea. Its waters are bordered by areas with an unique history. In 1920 a referendum in North and Central Schleswig resulted in the restoration of North Schleswig to Denmark, and the border between Denmark and Germany has remained undisturbed in the middle of Flensburg Fjord ever since. The island - the legendary small Ox Island - belongs to Denmark.

le tue foto sono sempre ricche di poesia e questa non poteva fare eccezione con i suoi colori sfumati e l'illuminazione molto morbida .
Molto ben definito il soggetto che pare essere un invito a dirigersi verso queste acque immobili sopra le quali gli uccelli fanno le loro evoluzioni.

Hello Harriet,

To make an interesting photograph, when the light is poor and the colours are subdued, is extremely difficult.
Your shot, however, uses fine composition to draw attention; then it is pleasing to pick up the mood of the winter month, sharply captured.

Hello Harriet,
The long jetty doesn't seem to be of much use for the time being, but in a few months this place will once again be crowded with holiday-makers and private small boats. The view may look nicer then in a way, but the very quiet and peaceful atmosphere of this photo will be gone. Looking carefully I find a surprising amount of blue, yellow, brown and green tones in what first looks like an almost monochrome picture.

Hi Harriet,
This looks like a very typical winter day, cold and grey. But these soft colours seem to be an advantage here, the picture is very peaceful and pleasant, in spite of the cold and rather unpleasant weather conditions. I really like the composition here and the nice balance between the different parts of the photo. The two horizontal lines, i.e. The white line of the ice and the light blue line of the land far away hold the scene together. The jetty and the little island are also in a very good balance. A very attractive picture!

Good morning Harriet,
The island on the Fjord is an eyes catching element on this image, pitty it was not under sunny daylight.
The second element interesting is the wooden jetty that gave extra DOF when stretched out to sea.
The third is the frozen water-edge on shore.
Nicely combined in one photo.

Da habe ich auch gestanden und dieses Inselchen betrachtet ... und kurz vorher wunderbare Hot Dogs gegessen ;-)
Dein Foto vermittelt das "Ambiente" eines Wintertages an der Küste sehr anschaulich und Dein Text beschreibt wunderbar, wo wir hier sind. Der Bildaufbau mit dem Steg als "Gegengewicht" zur Insel gefällt mir sehr gut.

I love the minimalism and depth of the composition, the way the wooden jetty extends from the foreground and cuts through the horizontal layers reaching for the distant strip of land that lines the horizon. The clarity of the view and the sharpness of the textures are exquisite. I think that they contrast intriguingly the sense of isolation and mystery enhanced by the weak light and subdued colours. A picture with a interesting composition. A lots
of people would place the wooden pier in the
middle, but luckily you didn't, because every
subject is nicely separately from each other
and that makes the picture nice calmness. The
layers and the lines of the wooden pier creates
a nice depth. Light management is also excellent.

Dear Harriet

I thought of you yesterday as I was buying a Kringle cake at our local Danish bakery. They have a huge mural on the wall of our Mary and Fred which always makes me smile.

Anyway, to your beautiful photo. The soft muted colours are so beautifully managed. I love the silvery light and the little pier running into the lake is magical. There is such an atmosphere of mystery and romance here, that warm weather could never evoke. A superb scene, masterfully handled and realised. Congratulations.

I like this photo taken in gloomy winter day. The empty jetty lead to foggy opposite shore. The tiny island must be private because possess big white house. Poor light condition made this photo almost like black and white.
