Photographer's Note
Ema heap was made from mined out waste material from Ostrava coal mines. Under the ground it's constantly burning and the temperature inside can reach 1500 °C. While entering is on everybody's own risk, there are artificially made routes and visitors on foot and even bikes are normally found on Ema. On the top (close to the place of this photo), some people made a fireplace, which is of course banned because anyone can smell the gas (mostly sulfur dioxide) rising from Ema even with stuffy nose. When I visited the heap last winter, this place was wet with some grass while the rest of the land was covered in snow.
