Photographer's Note

The Franciscans were in Ilok positively since 1343. The construction of the Franciscan and the parish Church of St. Ivan Kapistran in Ilok in the Gothic style was ordered by duke Ugrin. It was finished in 1349. At the time of construction, the church was dedicated to Mother of God Taken Up Into Heaven. Since 1700, the church was dedicated to an Italian Franciscan, Ivan Kapistran, buried in the Franciscan church and canonized in 1690. As a Church of St. Ivan Kapistran Ilok monumental church of a saint, it became too small. That is why Nikola Iločki had it prolonged in 1468, when it acquired the today's length. After 1688, Catholic people from Bosnia and the Franciscans from Olovo arrived, which renewed the church and the monastery. Then the church got some features of the baroque. In 1906-1912, the last big reconstruction of the church was carried out according to drawings by the architect Herman Bolle, when it was reconstructed in the Gothic style. In 1913, the present day tower was built, which is the fourth by sequence. The altar painting presents St. Ivan Kapistran under the Belgrade castle, and it was painted by the Vienna painter Josip Kestler (1862). Next to the church, there is a chapel a room in which, according to the tradition, St. Ivan Kapistran died. The painting "The Blessing of St. Ivan Kapistran" was made in 1908 by Mirko Rački. The Franciscan monastery is partly from the Middle Ages (west wing), while the northern and the eastern wings were built until 1727, i.e. it got the today's appearance.
