Photographer's Note

Ruzica grad (Rose city in English) is ruined gothic castle in Orahovica, region Slavonija. Ruzica is one of largest castles in Croatia and is also largest gothic castle in Croatia. It is first mentioned in 1357. as kings property. Photo shows castle chapel.
As usual every medieval castle has it's legend and so Ruzica grad also has several legends. My personal favorite is the one about a girl named Ruzica. She was the youngest and only daughter of her family, and since the garden of the castle was full of roses at her birth they named her Ruzica, which literally means Little rose. Her father and brothers died in battle so Ruzica and her mother were left alone as rulers of castle. Her mother could not bare the loss of her husband and sons and she died of sadness. Ruzica was then left alone as ruler of castle and as tradition goes she needs to marry a man that would be the new owner, so a big tournament was organised. The winner was a black knight that was later revealed to be the one that killed her father and brothers in battle. She could not marry the killer of her family so she climbed to the highest tower and threw herself from the top. From that day all the roses in the castle garden have died and only thorns grew around it. If you go there you will notice that only around the castle there are thorns, and nowhere in the forest around it, which I personally find interesting.
Today the castle is in bad shape, mostly because it needs enormous amount of money just to maintain it in current shape. Unfortunately Slavonija region is not a big tourist destination even though it does have a lot to show and offer so ministry of culture does not fund it enough and local administration does not have enough resources to reconstruct it on it's own.
