Photographer's Note

This is a Franjo Kre×ma statue on the Freedom square in the City of Osijek.
Franjo Kre×ma was born on September 2, 1862. The world will remember him as an incredibly talented young man, an excellent violinist and composer, who will stand by Paganini's side with his artistic contribution and legend. As a boy, he showed great interest in music and became a true violin virtuoso during his school days.
From his young days he fell in love with the violin, an instrument that brought him world fame. He studied music first in Zagreb with Đuro Eisenhut, and later in Vienna with Professor Heizler. He entered the Vienna Conservatory at the age of nine, as the youngest student of this conservatory ever! He finished his student days at the beginning of puberty, at the age of 13. He then embarked on a spectacular career across Europe. Already as a sixteen-year-old, he was adored by concert audiences in Rome, Prague, Venice, Genoa and Paris. At the age of 17 he became concertmaster in the "Bilse orkestar wBilse orkestru", which had in Berlin the official title "Bilse'sche Kapelle" from which later in 1885 the present-day Berlin Philharmonic was formed. He was appreciated by many famous artists, such as Giuseppe Verdi and Franz Liszt (he also played with the latter on one occasion). He composed one symphony, several marches and dances for orchestra, and three overtures. Everyone agreed that during Kre×ma's lifetime he would surpass his role model, Paganini.
Then he toured Europe, accompanied by his sister Ana, an excellent pianist. In Italy he had the honor of playing the famous Paganini violin. They said of him: "Francesco Kre×ma, a miracle from Croatia!". He died on tour in Germany at the age of 19, after suffering from an ear infection. Thus death prevented him from pursuing an even greater career and creating an even greater legend. Franjo Kre×ma died as a 19-year-old in Germany on June 5, 1881. Today, an elementary school in Osijek bears his name, the Society of Friends of Music, a chamber orchestra, but also a memorial, ie a meeting of young strings.
