Photographer's Note

This is a statue of Gregory of Nin and was erected in 1929 in Split. He is 8.5 metres tall. He was a bishop and a defendant of the Croatian language and defied the Catholic Church in 926 when it was declared that the Mass should be conducted in Latin. A language which Gregoory said few Croatians could understand.. He is now regarded as an historical defender of Croatian culture, language and statehood.
It is believed that rubbing his big toe will bring good luck and the toe has become very shiny.
