Photographer's Note

Dubrovnik - its name derives from the Croatian word dubrava, which means oak wood - was founded in the first half of the seventh century. Its golden age as a maritime and merchant centre was during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Its turbulent history - which included its occupation by Italy and then by Germany during the Second World War - culminated in 1991/92 in a lengthy siege and considerable destruction by Serb and Montenegrin forces.
