Photographer's Note

Yes, this is Capital Hill, not Capitol Hill. The title is correctly spelled :-)

This is the Tsarevets hill, site of the Bulgarian royal palace when Tarnovo (today Veliko Tarnovo) was the capital of Bulgaria from 1185 to 1393. Most of the palaces and churches that were situated here were destroyed when the Ottoman Turks conquered the area in 1393. During the 20th century Soviet archaeologists helped the Bulgarians to excavate and partly restore the hill, which is now one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.
