Bicycle travel on the Silk Road:
The ancient Romans had two ways to reach Byzantium, the head of the Silk Road: starting in Ostia by ship, or from Brundisium (=Brindisisi) accross the Adriatic sea to Albania, over the mountains to Lychnidos (=Ohrid) and along the foothills of Pirin and Rhodope mountains in Bulgaria to Adrianopolis (=Edirne).
The picture is taken after a walk in the Pirin National Park near Bansko, Bulgaria. It shows the Vihren (=Вихрен) , 2914 m a.s.l. Its flanks are covered by Pinus mugo, Mountain pine. The National Park is famous for its old stands of Pinus leucodermis (Bosnian pine, Черна мура, Schlangenhaut- Kiefer) but they are found at lower altitude.
