Photographer's Note

After spending a few days in Split I took a detour from the coast and headed a little ways inland to Mostar.

I posted another photo of the bridge a while ago, and used this same description:

In english it's "The Old Bridge." In actuality the bridge is no longer old. It was rebuilt using traditional methods following the war and its destruction and officially reopened in 2004.

The original bridge spanned the Neretva River from 1567 - 1993, before being destroyed by Croatian forces. It was originally built by the Turkish and also rebuilt by a Turkish company under the supervision of UNESCO and is now a World Heritage Sight.

One thing that I like about this photo is that the bridge is seen as a symbol of the Turkish/Islamic influence in the region and in the background you can see the cross on the top of the mountain.
