Photographer's Note

This is from the old part of Sarajevo in the early autumn of 2008. It may just give you an idea of the steep hills surrounding the city and the severe conditions for the people living under a siege by Bosnian-Serb troops on those hills for almost four years from 1992 to 1996, when more than 5000 civilians were killed.

Half way up the hill you see the white stones of a large Muslim cemetery. Those who had their final rest there had not all died during the siege but a large number had, and the cemetery had obviously grown substantially during those years.

Here is a larger version.

I will post two workshops from the same area showing more hills above the city and also by coincidence including a lot of people.

In case you want to see approximately where I was standing when I took the main photo the map coordinates are 43.858912, 18.433786.
