The Royal Library of Belgium (Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België in Dutch, Bibliothèque royale de Belgique in French, abbreviated KBR and sometimes nicknamed Albertina) is one of the most important cultural institutions in Belgium. The library has a history that goes back to the age of the Dukes of Burgundy. In the second half of the 20th century, a new building was constructed on the Mont des Arts in central Brussels, near the Central Station. The library owns several collections of historical importance, like the famous Fétis archives, and is the depository for all books ever published in Belgium or abroad by Belgian authors.

There are four million bound volumes in the Royal Library, including a rare book collection numbering 45,000 works. The library has more than 700,000 engravings and drawings, 150,000 maps and plans, and more than 250,000 objects, from coins to scales to monetary weights. This coin collection holds one of the most valuable coins in the field of numismatics, a fifth-century Sicilian tetradrachm.

The library also houses the Center for American Studies, a new institute of higher learning established by the University of Antwerp, the Free University of Brussels, the University of Ghent, and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, which is internationally accredited for delivering Master of Arts degrees in American Studies.

The Royal Library is open for reference only. Patrons must be at least eighteen years of age and must pay an annual membership fee

Eigenlijk ken ik dit gebouw enkel met de benaming Albertina Bibliotheek.
Persoonlijk vind ik het - van buiten gezien - niet echt een mooi gebouw. Je toont ons een deel ervan op een speciale, meer grafische wijze.
Heb je ooit al op het dak ervan foto's genomen ? Ik niet maar naar het schijnt, zou dit 's zomers op bepaalde uren mogelijk zijn.

Hello Eric, This view of the Royal Library in the black and white version is a bit gloomy but I like the composition very much Fantastic how all the vertical lines are shown. Excellent graphic.

Hello Eric,
This photo doesn't really tell me what impact the building would have if I saw it from the street. But that is not so interesting, because the photo is entirely about greyscale and graphics, processin and cropping. The result is impressive.

How much more impact it has in mono!! A little drama of repetitive patterns, shapes and lines with excellent tonalities along with contrast makes it a strong graphical value of the everyday....

Dit soort foto’s zijn voor mij altijd een heerlijke uitdaging om de juiste uitsnede te vinden en vaak zijn er verschillende oplossingen mogelijk. Hier heb ik gekeken naar de foto zonder de boven rand, dus alleen de kolommen en ook naar een smaller formaat waardoor het verticale meer wordt benadrukt. Jouw keuze laat het verloop van de grijze tinten prachtig uitkomen die zowel in de lucht als in de gevel zitten.
Boeiende foto.

Salut Eric. Cette fois tu as bien joue' avec les lignes verticales,apres les horintales dans ton dernier post. Une prise de vue gagnante pour creer cet effect geometrique de haut niveau depuis la facade de la biblioteque bruxelloise,toujours quelque chose de different et original et different a regarder chez toi,bien fait! Ik ben er eenmalig geweest, met een groep met een Prof voor een boek voorstelling.
Van buiten uit is het niet zoals het van binnen eruit ziet.
We mogen trots zijn op onze nationale koninklijke bibliotheek.
Wordt door de scholen te weinig bezocht.
Goede architecturale foto schuin genomen, bedankt.

Heel mooie foto van de zuilenrij van de bibliotheek. De verschillende verticale, horizontale en diagonale lijnen zijn erg sterk in de compositie. De verschillende tinten van het steen zijn duidelijk te zien op deze zwartwit foto.

Mooie serie over Brussel ben je aan 't posten, Eric. Dit vind ik het sterkste beeld tot nu toe. Super strak en akelig kil, zoals je het hier toont. Het lijkt alsof de bibliotheek is ontworpen om mensen angst in te boezemen. Hopelijk is het binnen gezelliger...

(Ik ken de locatie heel goed, maar ben nog nooit binnen in de bibliotheek geweest. Misschien moet ik dat eens doen.)

A creative and interesting composition, with a perfect symmetry in those vertical lines that form the building, contrast with the diagonal cut of the upper part, a perfect degradation of grays.
Very good management of sharpness and lighting, gives great relief to the image.
