Photographer's Note

Charles de Croy succeeded Philippe, his father, in 1483. He married Louise d' Albret, sister of Jean d' Albret, king de Navarre and widow of Jean of Burgundy, count de Nevers and of Etampes. When the war burst in our countries, Charles lined up side of Maximilien of Austria which rewarded it for its services by creating it in 1486 prince de Chimay. In 1491, he became knight of the Golden Fleece. For impassioned history, it is here

Alabaster: this term indicates two varieties of decorative stones: a) masses grained gypsum finely, resembling the Carrara marble. (Syn.: gypseous alabaster, gypseous alabaster); b) calcareous variety of onyx of the old authors. (Syn.: calcareous alabaster, Egyptian alabaster, marble onyx).
