Photographer's Note

Belgium is famous for beer, chocolate, waffels, fries, Vincent Kompany, Hercule Poirot, saxophones, comic books, Tintin and Jacques Brel. But mainly beer.

Westvleteren is a trappist beer, i.e. beer brewed in a Trappist abbey. In Belgium there's a long tradition of religious orders brewing beer (and making cheese).

The other trappist beers are Rochefort, Chimay, Achel, Westmalle, Orval and La Trappe. The last one is just across the border in the Netherlands.

Westvleteren is not sold commercially and can only be bought in person at the Westvleteren abbey itself. It comes in three varieties: 8, 12 and blonde. Westvleteren 12 has often been voted 'the best beer of the world'. And who am I to disagree?

Here are my current favourite Belgian beers:

LIGHT BEERS
1. Karmeliet
2. Chimay Blanc
3. Quintine blonde
4. Seefbier
5. Kempisch Vuur

DARK BEERS
1. Westvleteren 12
2. Rochefort 12
3. Westmalle double
4. Chimay bleu
5. Rochefort 8

Note that light/dark refers to the colour only.

With a special cheers to my local beer, De Koninck, which is amber.

Cheers!
Prosit!
Schol!
Santé!
