Photographer's Note

DE PANNE is Belgium's seaside town closest to the French border. Between the town centre and the border (with an industrial site on the other side) is a nature reserve called "Westhoek" (western corner), echoing the nickname of this region in Flanders.

VISSERSDORP (fishing village) is sandwiched between De Panne proper and the Westhoek nature reserve. It is a somewhat bizarre ensemble of old-style fishing. They were built some 100 years in tradtional old Flemish style. We passed them on our way to go walking in the Westhoek nature reserve, but this "village" seemed more like a gated community to me. I don't think there are any fishermen living there. This picture was shot through the bars of a big entrance gate. A surprise find, but a bit sad.
