St. Michael's Church in the first half of the 17th century (illustration from Flandria illustrata, 1641)
The St. Michael's Church is a church in the Belgian city of Ghent, capital of the province of East Flanders.

Construction History
Already in 1105 there was a chapel in the same place on the Leie, founded by the Sint-Baafsabdij. [1] At the time, this abbey was in competition with St. Peter's Abbey, the other Ghent abbey that had erected the then St. John's Church (now St. Bavo's Cathedral) and St. Nicholas' Church in the city center. The current church in late Gothic style was started in 1440 and in fact only finished in 1825.
From the Romanesque church, which originated here around the end of the 11th century, there are no clear remains anymore. The 13th century was very disastrous, with several fires. In 1440 it was decided to build a completely new church in the late Gothic style.
Ship and transept were completed in the early 16th century. In 1623 the early gothic choir was replaced by a Brabant gothic specimen with aisle and five beam chapels. Characteristic of the late Brabant gothic is the use of sand-bearing limestone, the imaginative crotch rib, net and star vaults, and the high, wide pointed arch windows. What is remarkable about this church is how Gothic architecture lived through in an era of Renaissance and Baroque.

I hope that you enjoy it
