Dear friends,

Every time I come in Ghent, and try find a new place for a good picture with a little bit historic value.
It Rabot is a very old place in Ghent, but you can see on the photo that everything become marred through ultra-modern buildings, absolutely required for the a lot new people in Ghent, + 125.000 the last 20 year, a lot people out of North Africa, Morocco and Turkish, but also out of East Europe.

I hope that everyone can enjoy.

The Rabot was built in 1489 at the intersection of the canal and the Lieve (a small canal) . It was built to commemorate the victory of Ghent against the 40,000 -strong army of Frederic the Second . It had a dual function of the water level of the Lieve arrange and also act as a defensive stronghold for the city . It was part of the city wall and then did well as a toll booth. As a result of the abolition of the patent rights on July 18, 1860 , the ramparts were demolished and cultivable land surrounding the Rabot was enlarged . Partly caused by the family Hemptinne , the de Smet , the brothers Van Hoecke , La Gantoise Liniere and others , who all family owned a plot of land outside the city walls (especially cotton manufacturers so ) emerged later Rabot
The Rabot had in the course of time several other functions . Thus, it was once a “Sashuis” , a powder magazine , an icehouse and electricity cabin. There are meeting and banquet rooms housed .
