Thirteen month ago, during the Christmas time 2012, I was in Ghent.
I had one trouble the distance between the building and me self, a little bit too short, the building is a little bit to narrow and to close against the edge of the picture, but I hope that this never is a trouble is for the visitors.

Source Wikipedia:
The Old Post Office is located in Ghent on the Corn Market and the Graslei , next to the St. Michielshelling . The building was erected between 1898 and 1910 . It was designed by architect Louis Cloquet in collaboration with Stephane Mortier for the world of 1913. To make room for this building , a beautiful warehouse was demolished in Louis XIV style .
The facades are decorated with statues and coats of arms , these couples Belgium , Flanders , Wallonia , the 9 provinces and 23 former heads of state for European . There are about 100 in total . The building has octagonal towers with spiers , including the stair tower on the corner with the Stars Street and entrance also stair tower at the Corn Market . Further jumps 52 meter high clock tower in the eye . On the side of the Corn Market , we see five images that refer to the five continents . The pigeons that are painted on the walls still refer to the original function of the building. Despite these traditional elements is made use of contemporary materials and techniques . Hygiene was a strong focus . The glass and steel structures were hiding behind a colorful stone .

In 1998 the building was sold by the Belgian Postal Services . Then there was a shopping center on the ground floor with apartments above . Currently the building is vacant , though there are rumors that it would be an Apple Store the location. [ 1 ] This impressive building is part of a zone formed by the St Michael's Bridge bounded by the house Saint Michael and the Post.

Yes, the building is a tight fit, its squeezed in for sure, but on the positive side it makes for a strong visual impact.

Hi John,
I think you have filled the frame perfectly here, I see what you mean about it being a little tight, but its not a negative to me in any way. I love how the picture is filled with this intricate detail, and the horse and carriage and foreground are charming too. The people bring wonderful life to the ground level, while the building itself is amazing.
A stunning sky too, really beautiful shot.

Dag John,
Ik vind het oud postkantoor het mooiste gebouw van Gent. Maar wat aan de buitenkant zo mooi is, is jammer genoeg niet te vergelijken met de verwaarloosde binnenkant. Dit is toch wel spijtig en teleurstellend. Het gebouw heb je van dichtbij genomen, zodat we alle details goed kunnen bekijken. In mijn gids staat dat je in de gevel een aantal vrouwenbeelden kan zien die de liefjes van de architect zouden zijn ! De paardenkoets die voor het gebouw staat, toont dat Gent een stad met toeristische charme is. Ik vind het grappig dat je het wandelwagentje juist voor de koets hebt genomen. Op een zekere manier is een koets een op grote schaal wandelwagentje ! Een heel mooie opname van dit iconische historische gebouw.

Het oude postgebouw is inderdaad heel erg mooi. Ik heb er ook ooit eens een foto van geplaatst.
Hier toon je het van dichterbij en zijn de beelden en andere versieringen goed zichtbaar. Prachtig gedetailleerd.
Ik moet bekennen dat ik op de Korenmarkt nog nooit een paardenkar zag ... Was ik er dan altijd op de verkeerde momenten?

Hi John,

I doubt anyone is terribly concerned with the edges of this gorgeous building being right along the frame...there's much more to admire from its exquisite architecture so as not to be an issue. Wow, I wish my post office looked like this, I'd be happy to give up internet conveniences to physically go and mail a letter from somewhere like this. :) The tight composition actually enhances the overall design and detail, and the action outside makes this feel lively and entertaining. Looks fantastic in the larger size too. Enjoy the day ahead.

Olá John,

sometimes is difficult take photos of big buildings as that you show to us. I saw you used a 24-105mm lens, maybe with a 18mm and you being place in the most far coner you could put all in the frame. But to me it is a great photo anyway. I like the many people in front of it, including the horse power chart.

Howdy John,

Like everyone else, a fine view of Ghent's Kohrenmarkt in winter with the bundled strollers and horse carriage in the center. Then the impressive architecture appearing much older than reality. I would have guessed from the baroque renaissance period.
