St Michael's Church is a church in the Belgian city of Ghent capital of the province of East Flanders.
Already in 1105 stood in the same place on the Lys chapel. The present church was begun in 1440 in late Gothic style and in fact finished only in 1825.
Of the Romanesque church, which originated here around the end of the 11th century, there are no obvious remains more. The 13th century was very disastrous, with several fires. In 1440 it was decided to build in the late Gothic style. Completely new church
In the early 16th century nave and transept were completed. In 1623, then it was early Gothic choir replaced by a copy of Brabant Gothic with ambulatory and five radiating chapels. Characteristic of the late Brabant Gothic is the use of sand limestone, the imaginative cross rib, network and star vaults, and the high, wide lancet. Is remarkable about this church, the Gothic architecture lived in an era of renaissance and baroque.
