Photographer's Note

Leuven is a small town with a big university. The history of the (catholic) University of Leuven goes back to 1425. It is one of the oldest in the world and the biggest university which has Dutch as its main language.

Leuven is also famous for its beer. The Stella tradition goes back to 1366, though the contemporary pils only started out as a Christmas special in 1926. Being a very commercial beer, Stella has toned down its bitterness and sweetened a lot over the years.

Anyway, students and beer make a great combination, so Leuven has a (even) higher bar per head ratio than most other Flemish towns. Though winter weekends can be dreary (most students return home), Leuven comes to life in summer with lots of outdoor terraces for food and drink.

This picture shows Leuven's iconic town hall, which was built in gothic style in the 15th century. It also features a blue sky, which is quite rare in these parts of the world.
