Photographer's Note

Schoonselhof Castle is an abandonned castle villa on the southern edge of Antwerp, more or less on the border between the suburbs of Wilrijk and Hoboken. It is located on the grounds of Schoonselhof cemetry, which is our city's biggest and most famous cemetry.

The original villa was built in Italian style for Gaspar Ducci, a 16th century trader of Italian descent. Over the years it was built and rebult several times to suit the style in fashion. Today's neo-classicist building dates from the 19th century.

The last owner of this castle was Jules Moretus, the famous 19th century mayor of Wilrijk. When Moretus died without an heir in 1911, the castle and its grounds were bought by the city council, just in time to establish a honoary park for the soldiers of the Great War, which marked the beginning of Schoonselhof as the city's most important cemetry.
