Photographer's Note

The Beguinage (Begijnhof) of Hoogstraten consists of 36 little houses and a baroque church (what you see on the picture are some of these little houses). This beautiful beguinage was founded around 1380. In 1506 the whole complex was lost in a fire. Only this church was saved.

In 1972 the beguinage was deserted by the last of these 'begijntjes' (religious women who were, however, not nuns). Twenty years later, in 1992, some inhabitants of Hoogstraten decided to restore the whole complex. Since 1997 all the houses have new inhabitants. The house in front is the museum with work of the famous artist Alfred Ost.
