Photographer's Note

This picture shows a detail of a lamppost on the Koningin Astridplein (Queen Astrid Square).

Until the 1960's the area around the Central Station was famous for its raunchy nightlife. These days the square still marks the beginning of the city proper.

It's still a busy hub for public transport, it's close to the zoo, the cinema's, Chinatown, the traditional gay quarter is just around the corner, as well as the Jewish quarter and where the African community lives.

The building in the background is the Radisson Blue. This big fancy hotel designed by the American postmodernist architect Michael Graves. Its fairytale colours and towers toy with the architecture pf Antwerp's golden age, and also with the Antwerp Central Station, which is directly opposite.
