Photographer's Note

Number 4 of my Havenhuis series.

Havenhuis (the Antwerp Port House) opened in autumn 2016. It is the final work of the Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, who died just before the Havenhuis opened.

The new Havenhuis consists a gigantic ship-like shape on top of the old fire department building, which was built in 1922 in a style that evokes Antwerp's renaissance town hall.

The ship-like shape at the top, with its many faceted glass exterior, also evokes the diamond trade for which Antwerp is famous.

This picture leaves out the renaissance-style barracks that serve as a base and fully focusses on the front section of Zaha Wadid's added constuction.

At the bottom of the picture you see a part of the Kattendijkdok (dock) which was excavated in the 19th century.
