Learning about Flanders
No fair without "smoutebollen (see link for recipe). This delight belongs to the family of doughnuts & alike. Served in a cone-shaped paper-bag, sprinkled with confectioner's sugar and piping hot resulting in holding a ball by the fingertips, sneezing from the hot bite, spraying the sugar all over your clothes or sticking to your lips :-D
The name "smout" indicates these balls are fried in lard (as opposed to the dutch variant where they use frying-oil and they're called "oliebollen")
Picture taken at the "Sinksenfoor" (WhitsunFair), a local fair which lasts for several weeks.
