Photographer's Note

In the summer of 1941 Brest Fortress was defended by Soviet soldiers for 6 weeks against the Nazis in the first days of Operation Barbarossa, earning it the title of Hero Fortress. The fortress became a symbol of the Soviet resistance during the Great Patriotic War (WW2) it is now a memorial to those that died. 3 million Belarussians died in the war, one third of the population.
