Photographer's Note

Toilet of Modern Art, Hundertwasser Village, Kegelgasse, Vienna.

I’m not even going to mention Marcel Duchamp's most famous toilet in modern art, but here’s another pretender to the throne, if I may use that expression. Opposite the famous Hundertwasser House, which I featured several years ago, is this busy market, known as the Hundertwasser Village, where you will find the so-called Modern Art Toilet, which proved so irresistible, I paid good money for a service I didn't require at the time.

Friedrich Stowasser (December 15, 1928 – February 19, 2000), better known by his pseudonym Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser, was an Austrian-born artist, architect and environmental campaigner. He insisted on organic forms and stood out as an opponent of the straight line and any standardization, calling straight lines "godless and immoral" and "something cowardly drawn with a rule, without thought or feeling". I enjoyed my time in the loo!
