Photographer's Note

This is very different from most photos I take, and I suppose it won't please many of you. It's from a large exhibition of American pop art from the 1960's and 70's currently shown at the Mumok (Museum Moderner Kunst, Museum of modern art) in Vienna, Austria.

I don't like photos from museums or galleries which just show a painting or a sculpture, and nothing else. Something has to be added to make it your own composition, like some kind of interaction between the works of art and the spectators. Otherwise it's not your own photo, it's a theft of somebody else's creation - and not allowed by the TE rules.

When I saw this painting I didn't have any person to use for a photo, so I decided that the walls and the irregularly shaped floor could be regarded as "my" contribution to the composition. However, when I had taken one photo and decided I needed another one, this girl happened to step inside my frame. She didn't interact with Joan Crawford but looked at me, clearly surprised to find a camera pointed at her. But she holds her head at the same angle as Joan Crawford, and that was enough interaction for me.

The painting was made in 1964 by James Rosenquist (born in 1933) and is titled "Untitled (Joan Crawford says...)". It was obviously copied from an advertisement, so I had to find out what Joan Crawford was actually supposed to say, which was "I've made those mildness tests that you've read about - my choice is Camels". She was supposed to claim that a certain brand of cigarettes didn't hurt her throat.

Those were the days.

Joan Crawford was an American actress, born sometime between 1903 and 1908, possibly in 1904. She died for sure in 1977. Among her most famous movies are Grand Hotel (1932), Mildred Pierce (1945, for which she received an Oscar) and What ever happened to Baby Jane? (1962).

In a workshop I will show a totally unrelated photo, but from the same show.

Here is a larger version of the main photo.

I apologize for the poor technical quality of both photos.
