Photographer's Note

Travels on the Silk Road:
In Albania, a little off the ancient Silk Road, on the Llogorasë pass South of Vlorë, I met this group of men singing. And I mean singing, singing like the Gods.
It's Albanias best kept secret, their incredibly complex and original folk song tradition. There are byzantine elements in the songs, like the continuous burdon, an improvising lead singer and the Greek tonality. But that is only part of the fun: one singer (not the same all the time) is sometimes seeking the best *dissonance* possible by varying his voice slowly in quarter tone steps. If it's done well it makes your ears split--- alltogether an unforgettable experience. Talk about interesting music! Bela Bartok would have loved to spin his Edison wax rolls here. Unfortunately Radio and TV blanket the country with loud and silly pop.
