Photographer's Note
The remains of an ancient Greek style 'Tholos', a circular structure of columns. This one is at Butrint adjacent to the Greek border. Not the most spectacular I've ever seen, but very few shots of Butrint on Trek Earth so here's another. The Baptistery dates from the 6th century AD. It replaced an ancient Roman structure adapted to the needs of Christianity. Unfortunately the mosaics have either been removed to a museum or covered in a few inches of gravel to preserve them from tourists with high heels and heavy, jackbooted feet. I am leaning more towards the latter as the square support pedestals visible in the image below are not visible here. Archeology sites with delicate mosaics are often temporarily protected by covering the mosaics in a few inches of gravel until the government can afford to send in archeologists to remove the mosaics and replace them with copies for visitors to admire. The originals are sent to museums.

Hello Chris,
I have a photo very similar to this, just from a slightly different angle, but as you probably noted it never made it to TE. I enjoyed my visit to Butrint, but I wasn't too keen on my photos. But this is an interesting view with all these broken columns and the light is fine.
Regards,
Gert

Bonjour Chris,
Les arbres aident au cadrage de la scène. la prise de vue permet de voir les détails des ruines du baptistère de Butrint. La lumière rehaisse les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Hello Chris,
A great overview of this ancient site. The different heights of the columns make a very attractive photo and the old walls around them add some nice textures as well, brought out clearly by the sunlight. Well done.

Hello, Chris, I was also in Butrint. My picture is neighbouring with your old theatre view. A fascinating place with well-preserved ruins. Nice columns here.
I look at my pictures and the pictures on TE with a pang of sadness - I am happy I had not put off the journeys for later. When travelling will be possible again?
In Poland, the situation with COVID is more and more difficult.
Have a nice Sunday

Hi Chris
Thks to your notes to guide us along this image. Good archaeological pic of the ruins and there is always something interesting in the elements drawing the eyes in. Love the detail in fine natural colour, tones and finished off with that good contrast. Congrats
Best regards.

Hi Chris,
I remember your previous photos from Butrint.
You are right about the fact that if one has visited ancient sites in Athens before, Butrint probably will not be too exciting anymore, however this place is on my radar for a while because I do consider to go for holidays on Corfu someday and it is a frequent destination for a day trip from there. So one can spend high quality holidays on Corfu and at the same time have a glimpse of another country.
I like the level of contrast here which makes the view so realistic.
Nice arrangement of columns in the frame.
Very well seen and captured,
M
