Photographer's Note

A Guatemalan woman followed me around Chichicastenango’s narrow busy market. She was so friendly and persuasive that I ended buying a huipil, a long sleeveless embroidered tunic. Oh, she also agreed to have her picture taken, but only one shot.

Santo Tomas Chichicastenango has long been one of the magical destinations of Guatemala. A great market center for the Indians of the western highlands, it is busy on Thursdays and Sundays with traders who bring their produce, textiles, and handiwork from all the towns of the region. It is also a place where the traditional, mystical ways of Guatemala’s indigenous peoples still visibly hold sway.

This photo was taken in 1997, scanned, and levels adjusted with photoshop.
