Photographer's Note

La Puerta del Conde (the Count's Gate) is a military building of the 17th century that served as the entrance to the city of Santo Domingo. The name is in honor to the Count of Peñalva (Bernardino de Meneses Bracamonte y Zapata), who fought against the British invasion in 1655. The gate was the scenery of the first act of Independence of the Dominican Republic on February 27, 1844, and where the national flag was hoisted for the first time.
