164- Rincon de la Vieja, a photo from Guanacaste, West

Photographer's Note

Out of the 3 vocanoes I visited in Costa-Rica, this is the 3rd one. "Rincon de la Vieja" : "The Old Woman's Corner", is a reference to a local legend about a girl whose lover was thrown into the crater by her father. She became a recluse living on the mountain, and was credited with healing powers.

Rincon de la Vieja stands 1916 metres above sea level, and its last eruption dates back to February 1998. It's a "complex volcano", because it erupted at different locations through the ages.
I think the photo shows this as there is no single formed cone as is often the case, but there are cones at different locations in the range.

Rincon de la Vieja is well-known for its geo-thermal energy which could generate a lot of electric power. However, for the time being, the area is protected within the National Park, so it cannot be exploited.

I took the photo from an arena where we were watching a rodeo, hence the foreground.
I shall tell you more about this part in my next post.

Hello Marie-Louise,

The clouds hovering over the volcano are typical for the tropical climate, and set the mood in this fine image!
Great light that renders strong and vivid colours, the composition is well planned and gives a superb feeling of depth...
Maybe the shape of the mountain isn't a typical cone volcano but I take your word for it hehehe!

Belle vue sur le hachage et la somme de la montagne dans les nuages, un bon affichage des couleurs et de belles photos.

Je sais que le Costa Rica, mais il semble un pays très intéressant, surtout pour la haute protection de l'environnement là-bas.

Je constate que l'ermite de la montagne, en plus de son don médical, a beaucoup de pouvoir sur la nature pour y créer ce relief extraordinaire sur les pentes et cette magnifique couronne de nuages!

J'aime ce genre de paysage , mi rural mi sauvage . L'image est intéressante , depuis l'enclos du premier plan , jusqu'aux montagnes coiffées de nuages , en passant par la forêt .

Bonjour Marie-Louise,

Un bien joli et intéressant panorama sur ce sommet en sommeil pour l'instant mais qui, d'après tes photos complémentaires, bouillonne à certains endroits... Le Costa Rica est une vraie mine d'or pour les scientifiques et géologues de tout poil. Cet enclos est un intéressant premier plan également. Bon coup d'oeil Marie-Louise et merci pour les photos en sus.

L'arrière plan est magnifique. Si il n'y avait pas ce grillage cela aurait été possible de photographier au dessus de la barrière.
