Photographer's Note

People of Sapa

As mentioned at one of my previous pictures the city of Sapa isn’t beautiful at all.
These days it’s undergoing a construction boom and most new buildings look downright ugly.

The town is especially popular as a starting point for the surrounding villages and for the rice terraces in the area.
On the other hand you will see many colourfully dressed hill-tribe people who come to town to sell their products which are substantially handicrafts.

As mentioned earlier in the note to a picture of a child in Bac Ha (a picture that afterwards has been inactivated by TE) also in Sapa I was surprised to see very small children alone on the streets, even late in the evening. (I don’t mean homeless children)
Apparently parents are confident that nothing will happen to them.
Perhaps my surprise came from being raised in an overprotected society but I found it strange to see young children alone until late in the evening.

More pictures in the workshops.
All five photos are taken in the center of Sapa.
