Photographer's Note

Let me return to my first love....

Vietnam is a country I know quite well, as I spent some years working there at the end of the last century. Yes, I'm getting old...

Anyway, at that time MUI NE was our 'secret' getaway. Getting there was an ardeous journey and half the fun. But there were a handful of places to sleep and eating fresh seafood out on the beach...what a treat!

When we visited the place again some ten years later, our 'hidden gem' had become a top destination in Vietnam's booming tourist business, much of the beach was now privately owned by hotels and most of the remaining fishermen were confined to the strip in front of the village at the far end of Mui Ne bay.

The kids in this picture had not been born when we first visited Mui Ne. In their short life span they have already seen enormous changes, some for the good, some maybe not so good.
I wonder what they dream of.

Having been born in a traditional fishing community, unchanged for centuries, what do these kids dream of, now that traditional world has 'opened up' so much.

Will they be fishermen, like their dad and all those generations before?
Or do they dream of fast cars and easy money?
