Photographer's Note

Em ơi, em ở lại nhà
Vườn dâu em đốn, mẹ già em thương
Mẹ già một nắng hai sương
Chị đi một bước trăm đường xót xa...

(Lỡ bước sang ngang, thơ Nguyễn Bính)

Sister, please stay home
To handle the mulberry field, and to assist our aged mother
Our aged mother has one sunshine and two fog cessions a day
Within each step away I made, the hundred torments I experienced…

(Poem by Nguyen Binh)

In Vietnamese daily conversation, Nguyen Binh’s passage “one sunshine and two fog cessions a day” has been an idiom to describe the popular hard situation when most Vietnamese mothers have to start their day before the morning dew though the long day under sunlight till after the evening dew to keep her children above water.

In our dialog, “one sunshine and two fog cessions a day” is an image of mother who normally works her long day with a shoulder pole and heavy load. I hope this picture taken at early hour in Hoi An ancient town gives you a concrete idea.
