Photographer's Note

In the past, I have posted two pictures about dog-meat in Vietnam, on July 15, 2006 and July 16, 2006. Today post is an update to them.

Currently, the dog-meat industry in Vietnam has been upgraded to international business. ”Where there is dog, we are there” is the motto of Son Dong villagers in Thanh loc Commune, Hau Loc District, Thanh Hoa Province. They are proud that their footprints have been all over Vietnam, and through out neighboring countries as well. In this village, they established a so-called “Dog Im-Ex Center”, to buy and traffic live dogs from Thailand across the Mekong river to Laos before consolidate in their bases in Thanh Hoa.

To be able to handle large batches of dogs from abroad, they got together and formed their "Dog Trading Club". Today, Thanh Loc Commune is the headquarters for some 30 companies working in this industry, which employed between 10 to 20 employees each, including foreigners. They paid Thai employee around US$200/month to hunt dogs and sell to them at a flat rate of 50 bath (±US$1.80) per head, regardless of size or weight, while the outgoing price from factory is US$1.30/kg of live-weight. The Viet bosses in Thanh Loc control the mid-range transit-camps along Thai-Lao border where they receive and accumulate and sort out merchandises before transition across Laos to Vietnam. From the “dog processing zone” at the foot of Ban Mountain, meat is shipped to restaurants all over country and exported to China.

Thanks to the business of dog-meat, Son Dong has been changed from the poorest village to rich community, with many young billionaires and motorbike is standard in every family. In other words, dog has prompted an economic revolution in a nation where people live and die for a fight or struggle.
