Photographer's Note

Baseball cap & helmet on,
one's for fashion, one's because the law says so,
checkered shirt, all in style, ciggie dangling from mouth,
I'm all set to go motorbikin'!

I'm trying to figure out what the T-shirt says. Is a a movie poster? Or commercial for perfumes for men? Or just random elements thrown together to puzzle and confuse me?

OK, here's my Hanoi motorbike story for you...

When we first visited Hanoi, motorbikes were still quite new. They were mainly Hongda's, which is a kind of cheapskate version of Honda, made in the shade, if you know what I mean.

Traffic back then was superdangerous for a couple of months, because most motorbike riders had been cyclists just before and they were still trying to figure out the difference in speed and maneuverabilty between the two.

Being used to Saigon, where bikes had been around a while longer, we found crossing the road in Hanoi suddently a lot more difficult.

But that's a long time ago. These days those who can afford it (or have the connections) drive a car and discover the pleasures of being stuck in traffic jams.
