Photographer's Note

On the first day of the new year, my very first day in Vietnam, I was in Hanoi. I soon met 'Phu'. A Vietnamese lilliputter, who owned a tiny little shop around the corner of my hostel.

He grabbed my arm when I passed by, and almost begged me to teach him a word of English. Hmm.. why not, I thought. I'd even get a cup of tea for it! A cup of tea for a word of English.
Since then I talked a bit of English with him, every time I saw him. I had to write down words in English, or pronounce them properly. He was so enthousiastic. Learned all the English he already knew by himself, by way of children's books and backpackers passing by.
Quite impressive. And of course I helped him. Very much liked his willingness.

The first Vietnamese I met, and a special one as well.
