Photographer's Note

Sa Pa’s Schoolyard

I took this picture during recess time of students of Lao Chai Elementary School. This is the lone school in this minority area about 14 km South of Sa Pa town. 90% of children in the area never had a chance to hold a pen simply because their parents could not afford the expense. Instead, teenager boys normally follow their fathers into the jungle, hunting or cutting timber. The duty of girls in this range of age is hand-weaving, dyeing and making clothes for entire family, or going to rice paddies to do the family agriculture. Kids stay home to take care of their younger siblings, or waiting along trekking paths to sell souvenirs to tourists.

When we stopped by to visit, the teachers asked us to not turn their students into beggars by giving money. They said, “please only donate pens and pencils and notebooks”.
