After the day when I took my last 2 main photos we did get to go inside Hue's Đại Nội Citadel. We couldn't go everywhere because there was plenty of water lying about.
One of the first things that we came across was this big old and a bit battered drum. The drum was often used to herald closing-time of the Imperial City. At this signal, sentries would fire the cannons of the Flag Tower and close, or open, the gates of the citadel. On the front of the drum you can just make out a Yin and yang symbol.

Hello Ian,
'Battered' is the word, but it's still looking good and colour wise it matches the surrounding wooden structures well.

Hi Ian,
The drum is well placed in the frame. The point of view is showing the details of the nig drum. The light is giving nice tints to the colors the picture. Have a nice day.

Hello Ian
Impressive 'music' instrument for sure that appears much bigger than the antique beer barrels of the fermentation cellars.
Thanks for the instructive note and the fine depiction of your picture.
Cheers

Hello Ian,
I presume you laid down on the floor to take this photo. It seems difficult to play this instrument, if it were placed high.
The drum is enormous and it looks like it has been through a lot. It probably also has seen a lot of history.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Ian
The small tears and perforations in the drum probably mean it can no longer be played or struck, but at least it survives. I was horrified that some sections of the imperial city were napalmed during the American / Vietnam War and severely damaged. Tfs!

Hello Ian,
Interesting instrument that needs a little TLC. I wonder how loud this drum would be if it worked.

MT
