Photographer's Note

After China and India I have moved my time machine to Vietnam, but much closer to present days. This was taken only 24 years ago, in April 1995.

This is from the citadel of Huế, the former imperial capital. It almost breaks my heart to see that the photo is not perfectly sharp, and it's also quite grainy. But the light was not very good and I had very little time - about 2-3 seconds - to prepare the shot. I saw that the tourist was about to give the old woman some money and I wanted to capture exactly this moment, so there was no time to set the camera perfectly right.

In the spring of 1995 I spent three weeks in Vietnam writing stories ahead of the 20th anniversary of the end of the war. The WS photo was taken during my research for one story. It was also taken in the Huế citadel, but apart from that it has no connection to the main photo, except that both of them were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Here is a larger version.

Both photos look considerably darker than on my desktop. :-(
