Photographer's Note

A portrayal of the bustling hyper floating market on Hau River - off Chau Doc town, specialising in local produce harvested from the fertile delta or 'rice baskets' as called by the Vietnamese. Preparation starts in the evening and throughout the night where boats of all shapes and sizes gather daily fully laden with seasonal vegetables, fruits, sugar canes, rice and many more. On boats the sellers have to hold high a bamboo stick hanging with fruits as signals of the goods they are selling.

The signal to buy is a whistling or waving hand, market-goers look at the goods from their own boat and sometimes stumble from boat to boat in search of what they want.

They do not bargain, just an exchange of a few words and the deal is done and money changes hands. The market lasts all day long, but it is at its most busy and interesting at daybreak. Some fruits will be bought and then be transported in a large boat to fruit-processing factories in Saigon even to Hanoi and Northern provinces or sold in local markets.

A shot of everyday life in Vietnam!
