Photographer's Note

Portrait of a Cham weaver taken in Katambong Chau Phong village in Ang Giang province on the Mekong Delta. There are some 13,000 Muslim Cham community of Malay origin who live side by side with other majority ethnic groups such the Krom Khmer, Chinese and Vietnamese. The Cham who are mostly farmers, live in wooden stilted houses on the bank of Hau river - a tributary of the Mekong River, and across on Chau Giang islets not far from town, while their women folks are actively engaged in pottery making and weaving.

Weaving their traditional threads on a daily basis using old looms, is carried out under the stilted houses during dry season, the tradition that is passed down from one generation to other at the very young age. Colour, design and motif make every cloth unique, no written patterns and all from memory. Please view
