Silk Road from Tashkent to Kashgar (3): Samarqand

This is one of the cupolas inside the Shir Dor madrassah of the Registan complex. The madrasah was built in the 17th century after the Timurid reign had ended by a local Uzbek Governor. You can see that the surface is sculpted, which breaks the harsh sunlight. The Arabic scripture is composed of a great number of different tiles. During Soviet times a great effort was made to revive the old handicrafts needed for repairing the architectonical gems of Uzbekistan.
