Travels on the Silk Road: Turkmenistan

The road from Mary to Turkmenabat crosses the Kara Kum desert. The Saxaul bushes reach into humid strata with their deep roots. Alexander "the Great" crossed the desert exactly here 2'330 years ago, bringing mostly destruction to the oases Merv and Tus. At the end of this hot stretch meanders the great Amu-Darya, "Oxus" for Alexander.
