Photographer's Note

One in a series of pictures taken on a boat trip on the Mekong River in Northern Thailand.

This area where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma meet is known as the Golden Triangle. Once infamous as a centre of opium smuggling it is now sold in Thailand as a tourist attraction. The article on the Golden Triangle in Wikipedea (click here for more information) seems to suggest that the opium trade continues in one form or another though much less overtly.

This picture was taken at the start of the trip in Thailand; on the opposite side of the river lies Laos; just to the left slightly further upstream on the Laos side lies Burma.
